The Complete Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist (Nigeria Edition)
Checklists · · 2 min read

Builders hand over a "finished" site. They never hand over a clean one. Fine dust sits on every surface, paint spots cling to the glass, and cement splashes hide on the tiles. This checklist is the exact sequence professionals use to take a site from construction-finished to genuinely ready.
Phase 1: Rough clean
Do this after all trades have finished but before any detailed work:
- Remove leftover debris, packaging, and protective films
- Scrape large paint, plaster, and adhesive drops (surface-safe tools only)
- Sweep and vacuum all floors, including corners and wardrobes
- First dusting pass on all surfaces, working from ceiling height down
- Clear and sweep balconies, staircases, and the compound
Phase 2: Detail clean
The longest phase. Work room by room, always top to bottom:
Every room
- Ceiling corners, vents, and light fittings dusted
- Walls dry-dusted, then spot-cleaned where the paint allows
- Windows cleaned inside and out, including frames and tracks
- Doors, frames, handles, and switches wiped and polished
- Skirtings and ledges cleaned along their full length
- Floors scrubbed appropriately for the material
Kitchen
- Cabinets cleaned inside and out
- Worktops, tiles, and splashbacks degreased and polished
- Sink descaled and shined; plumbing checked for debris
Bathrooms
- Tiles and glass cleared of cement film and paint spots
- Sanitaryware descaled, cleaned, and sanitised
- Mirrors and fittings polished
Phase 3: Final presentation
Immediately before handover, opening, or move-in:
- Final dust pass on all horizontal surfaces
- Floors mopped or buffed to finish
- Glass given a final streak-free polish
- Air the space; check every room against this list
The two mistakes everyone makes
Cleaning too early. If painters or tilers are coming back, your clean is wasted. Post-construction cleaning starts when the last trade leaves.
Using aggressive tools on delicate surfaces. Razor blades and acid on the wrong surface turn a cleaning bill into a replacement bill. Paint on glass, cement on tile, and adhesive on fittings each need specific, surface-safe methods.
When to call professionals
For a single room, a determined weekend can work. For a whole house, an office fit-out, a retail outlet, or a hotel, the dust volume and the surface risks make professional crews the economical choice. Oxygen Wash handles post-construction cleaning across Port Harcourt, with a free site visit and a written scope before any work starts.
