How to Remove Mould from Walls in Nigeria's Humid Climate

Why your walls keep growing mould

Mould needs three things: spores (always present in the air), a surface, and moisture. In the Niger Delta the moisture part is almost free: long rainy seasons, humidity above 80 percent for much of the year, and homes that stay closed up with air conditioning condensation. Common hotspots are bathroom ceilings, wardrobe interiors, wall corners behind furniture, and any wall that shares a side with a leaking pipe or a damp exterior.

Safe removal, step by step

For a small patch (less than about half a square meter) on a painted wall:

1. Protect yourself. Gloves, and ideally a mask. Disturbing mould releases spores.
2. Ventilate. Open windows; close the room off from the rest of the house.
3. Wash the area with warm water and detergent to lift the surface growth.
4. Disinfect with a proper anti-mould solution. Household bleach diluted 1:10 works on non-porous painted surfaces. Never mix bleach with any other chemical.
5. Dry the wall completely. A fan pointed at the wall for a few hours matters more than any chemical you used.
6. Watch it for two weeks. If it returns fast, you have an active moisture source.

What not to do

• Do not paint over mould. It grows straight through the new paint.
• Do not dry-brush it. That spreads spores through the whole room.
• Do not ignore the smell. A musty room with no visible mould often has growth behind furniture or inside a wardrobe.

Fixing the moisture source

Removal is temporary until you deal with the cause:

• Fix leaking pipes, roofs, and window seals first
• Pull furniture 5 to 10 cm away from exterior walls so air circulates
• Air the house regularly, especially bathrooms and kitchens
• In persistent rooms, a dehumidifier during the rainy season pays for itself

When to call professionals

Call a professional cleaning company when the patch is large, when it covers a ceiling, when it keeps returning after treatment, or when anyone in the house has asthma or allergies. Large infestations need proper containment, industrial treatment, and moisture diagnosis, not a bottle of bleach.
